INDONESIA THEME NIGHT: A GROWING POTENTIAL THAT IS GOING TO BOOM! (PART 2)

_DSC3562

Putu Aditya: To survive as a startup, you need more than passion and persistence.

As the co-founder of Halal XYZ, a startup helps to eradicate problems for Muslims in Taiwan, Putu has a lot to share about establishing a startup from the ground up. Their story all started from a simple idea – if they needed to organize database of Halal restaurants in Taiwan then why didn’t they make an App and save all the nuisances? With the idea to improve Muslims’ convenience in Taiwan, they gather a large amount of information and solutions to discuss. “ While you may know your idea and goals, you should still be prepared that it’s not gonna be easy in the long run.” Even though going through obstacles is a must when we start from scratch, Putu advised all the youngsters that as we could seek for help from mentor, school’s advisors and listen to experiences from who started before, that would open up our network in startup community, which further create a niche for us to stick to our dreams.

Ryan Huang: When we slow down and see how telecommunication plays a role in our life

“How important telecommunication means in business?” is the first question that Ryan raised as stepping on stage. “It makes our everyday life, shortens the distance between us.” Simple as it may seem, we normally ignore how telecommunication plays a role in our daily life.  For example, we may never think about why we still hang on to use traditional phones in this smartphone era. Ryan made it clear — since when we bury ourselves in the sea of telecommunication in our daily life, we need to release us from it a bit from time to time, and if we replace smartphones with outdated phones in our office, probably the companies’ privacy will be left with nothing.

Even though smartphone seems so convenient when we’re dealing with day-to-day business utilizing it, Ryan’s speech also raised a good concern to care about ourselves inward when using the up-to-date technology wisely.

Antonius Sunarto: Knowing your customer is the core.

Antonius Sunarto, the founder of ISheEra Technology, is a Chinese Indonesian familiar with both Indonesian and Taiwanese culture. By establishing ISheEra Technology, he sold a variety of feminine products. From his observation, women normally make a purchase based on their loved ones’ preferences; this shopping behavior, therefore, creating a business opportunity for him. Still, when it comes to digital marketing in a different market, he has a vital point to make – to observe our target audience very closely so that you will know how to upgrade the marketing strategies. Take one of the cosmetic cares for example, while they’re promoting products in Indonesia, they failed to dig into Indonesian girls’ preference, which emphasizes oil-control and it ultimately constitutes a failure. Besides, Antonius also arouse the awareness of the audience – no matter in where we wanna start our own business, we need to be crystal clear about our own strengths as well as resources, looking for a niche which is currently lacking in that market so that we can make a competitive solution that no one has envisioned before.

2018 Malaysia Theme Night

_DSC3639.JPG

On Nov 26th, 2018, we’re so glad to make Malaysia Theme Night alive on stage, and we are genuinely thankful to Anwar Udzir, Representative of Malaysian Friendship and Trade Centre, to give an opening speech as a special guest. Besides, we also invited three top-notch lecturers to share hands-on experiences with us. In this package, let’s have a quick recap of the main points from our keynote speakers!

_DSC3660

Blockchain can do more for human good!

Will Lu ,CBO of OwlTing Group, walked us through what blockchain can do for people or business with his own hands-on experiences. Many of us may get the concept of blockchain from bitcoin but in effect blockchain can serve for various purposes. Take OwlTing’s agriculture project for example. With the help of blockchain technology, they assist over 1500 farmers in Taiwan to monitor soil quality and humidity as well as crop, whose data are updated promptly on to the internet, ensuring customers would know what they just consumed. By doing so, Will stated, not only have they devised an immutable and transparent traceability as well as a way to find the root cause, but they have built a close bond with local farmers by visiting them and observing the real problems behind the scene.

_DSC3694

By taking a close look at your target, you can be famous for more than fifteen minutes.

As a Malaysian student in Taiwan, Ccwhyao always has a dream of his own — to share bits and pieces of his life in Taiwan from the perspective of a foreign student. Sticking to his passion, Ccwhyao initiated a Youtube channel with his classmate, which is called Kao Bei Cold. This channel puts cultural differences between Taiwan and Malaysia under the spotlight in an interesting way, which constitutes the main reason for its popularity among youngsters. Ccwhyao’s got the piece of advice for young people— if you’re so enthused by the notion of creating videos and channel of your own, kickstart one right now, since the best time for you to start is when you’re still a student, when you’re not bound by professional obligations, and most important of all, when failures lecture you with valuable experiences.

Malaysia, with its diversity and prosperous opportunities, is your next new world to conquest.

Dressing in a formal suit, standing upright on the stage, Yeinnie Tan wowed the audience with her crucial insights into the business environment of Malaysia. As the director of Malaysia Chamber of commerce in Taipei, she kindly introduces numerous resources and opportunities for Taiwanese to explore. She offered such resources as Commerce Development Research Institute and Malaysia Friendship And Trade Center, which we can refer to if we want to start a business in Malaysia. On top of that, she emphasized the importance of finding the correct methods and tools precisely since even if you bury yourself in endless work, the world still cannot find you and people would even not know your existence. Her suggestions indicated that after we located our dream job or interests and that we’re ready to set foot in Malaysia, we still need to take time and figure out how to connect all the strengths such as the diversity in languages and races, and map out the long-term plan in Malaysia.

Triple Matchmaking Event @ National Taiwan University of Science and Technology

On Jan 14th, STRTBOARD was invited to attend Taiwan Rapid Innovation Prototyping League for Entrepreneurs (TRIPLE ) matchmaking event at National Taiwan University of Science and Technology.  As a lead player in Taiwan’s startup market, TRIPLE has combined the benefits of SI/ODM, accelerators and research institutes in Taiwan with an eye to providing startup teams with designing, marketing, and researching services. Aside from solid assistance to startup teams, TRIPLE has also been making constant efforts to increase multilateral communication, which is why we got the ticket to the matchmaking event!

During the event, TRIPLE invited top-notch executives from  Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) to walk us through their experiences in India and Taiwan and the current startup trends. Established in 1958, IIT Bombay has been making progress along the way, emerging as one of the top technical universities around the globe. Their constant efforts in engineering education and research are world-renowned and with that, they have both built up cooperation with peer universities and institutes as well as created a niche for innovation through their umbrella organization named Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship (SINE).

The manager of SINE also took the floor and introduced themselves. Fixing its eyes on fostering entrepreneurship and nurturing tech startups, SINE administers a business incubator providing “scale to scale” support for tech-based startup teams and it manages to facilitate the conversion of research activity into entrepreneurial ventures.

Last but not least, there’re several startup teams from India that grabbed our attention. By and large, most of their services and products concentrate on rooting out social problems in their country with the implementation of cutting-edge technology. Take Kaaenaat for example. Bewaring the problem of traffic chaos in India, which may lead to tragic accidents from time to time, they made good use of advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS) to cut down on the possibility of a car crash. Also, Combat Robotics India Private Limited aims at saving more lives with robot designing.

It’s our pleasure to meet up with institutions with the same ideas at heart for creating a holistic and friendly startup ecosystem; also, getting to know more about startup market in India gives us a clearer idea regarding how to cooperate with teams from this country, which is the icing on the cake. STARTBOARD genuinely looks forward to further collaboration with Indian fellows we met in the event!

From student to startup, from India to Taiwan

Our first guest speaker is Nikhil Pathak, the founder of GO-ECO. As someone who took Ph.D. and has experienced university life in Taiwan, Nikhil brings out the real-life stories and his experience from being a student and his journey until he managed to build his own company. His company, GO-ECO, is a startup concerned about the worsening plastic pollution from all over the world. Nikhil built GO-ECO with the hope of their customers to be eco-friendly, just like the company name.

By Joining a competition called The Hult Prize, Nick was able to learn on how to turn an idea into solutions and make solutions into business model, and he thinks business model can make an impact on society.

Some inspiring words and tips from Nick that he got from his life experiences:

  1. Dream big
  2. Have a bigger vision and mission
  3. Turn an idea to a vision
  4. If you believe you can change the world, one day you will.
  5. A good idea is an idea that solves a problem

The leap of faith

Nick pointed out living out the comfort zone and go to do something you are not quite aware of is called the leap of faith.

Even if we succeed or fail, the leap is worth to take, so please take the leap.

Nick also encouraged students in Taiwan to take the first step to start a startup, since Taiwan has nice ecosystems, incubators, and co-working spaces. Startups are very diverse and powerful in Taiwan, so Nick encourages every student to go for the idea they have.

If you really want to have a startup, you should have a habit to work hard and get out of your comfort zone.”

From her own experiences, she has listed some crucial points we cannot ignore if we ever want to expand career paths to other countries!

  1. Before you negotiate with foreign partners, stand in their shoes instead.
  2. Don’t let culture shock restrain yourself from gaining hands-on experiences.

Anbert Lin: Advice from a senior investor has been a big shot in the arm to potenitial investors.

For those setting your sights on investing Thailand market, sit tight! Mr. Anbert Lin just shared his laser-like perception in making an investment!

  1. E-commerce

In recent years, Thailand’s e-commerce has been gaining popularity, which contributes to its rising value from 2.03 trillion baht in 2014 to 2.81 trillion baht in 2017. In this industry, LAZADA, Shopee could almost best describe the ecosystem, since they are the biggest two leaders in Thailand!

  1. Start-ups

To create more level playing fields for entrepreneurs, the importance of the ecosystem cannot be overestimated! Here are some trivial matters that enable us to see, Thailand’s startup market is quite glorious and could prosper in the near future.

In 2012, there’re only three officially funded startup companies with 2.1 M baht raised; nonetheless, from 2017, there are more than 90 startups founded in Thailand while 280M baht is raised for some brilliant ideas! Investment in a young company could be risky, so detailing inquiry and research become quite pivotal before making any decision!

STARTBOARD @ 2018 IDEAS SHOW: A REAL SHOT IN THE ARM FOR STARTUP MARKET IN TAIWAN

STARTBOARD participated in 2018 IDEAS Show which were held on July 24 at NTUH International Convention Center. IDEAS Show is a competition for startups companies from different countries, including Taiwan, South Korea, Papua New Guinea, Thailand, Peru, the Philippines, Singapore, and also Vietnam.

In this event, each of the startups delivered a 6-minute speech and there are also some exhibition booths to introduce the companies’ products. Throughout the years, TechGrind have nurtured 10 startup teams, who are outstanding enough to separate themselves from the crowd. Take Kiidu for example. Kiidu provides all sorts of caregiving services to household, which has been deemed an urgent need across the world — since we’re living in an aging society. Just as its catchy slogan goes “kindest caregivers for the ones you love,” their services are quite catering to people who are always on the go, lacking the time to take care of their babies or elders.

In addition, TechGrind also runs TechGrind Hub, which helds events, workshops, conferences. Holding common values and beliefs, STARTBOARD and TechGrind will make constant efforts hand in hand, looking for the common good for our startup teams!

Get your fresh products 24/7 online from Pushkart, a delivery startup from the Philippines!!

Pushkart, based in the Philippines, provides online delivery such as groceries, foods, and goods to the consumers’ house in Manila. Offering such 24-hour delivery services in the area where traffic chaos has been perceived common is an intelligent decision, but why and how did the ideas come on the table? During a casual conversation between two good old friends, Josh Aragon and Bryan Reyes, they sensed the crux of problems — people’s hectic lifestyle, congested traffic in Metro Manila and a long queue of people waiting for payment as well as the time consumed by exiting a parking lot — all sorts of nuisances can freak you out! Therefore, targeting busy workers who have no time to go for groceries, the two brilliant business minds then commit to making online delivery services possible, and here came Pushkart! What’s better, they don’t limit their services only within walking distance to consumers’ location.

Nowadays, Pushkart continues to cooperate with a well-known supermarket from the Philippines, Fish Market and delivers to all areas throughout Metro Manila. In their services, not only do they guarantee consumers the best and fresh products, but they also charge them with legit and just prices!

Are you still anxious about the lack of job opportunities? With the presence of Empleo, job hunting no longer puts you at the wit’s end!

Empleo also originated from the Philippines; it’s a network that tap short-term jobs from individual and enterprises and connect them to trained individuals. Empleo connects the workers to consumers based on consumers’ needs. For example, if a consumer needs someone to fix their generator, then it will connect them to the workers based on the location, skill, and rate. Empleo also has partnership with establishments like restaurants and waste management services that will help them deliver certain wastes to manufacturing industries as alternative raw materials.

With their interesting ideas blossoming, Empleo is also going to apply for STARTBOARD’s batch member, leaving footprints in Taiwan! Now that taking part-time jobs is gone viral among the younger generation, let’s wait and see how Empleo’s platform will work out for Taiwan market.
