Thailand Theme Night| Embark on a journey exploring Thailand market along with our honorable keynote speakers (Part 1)

On July 19th, 2018, Thailand Theme Night held by STARTBOARD drew people’s attention, not only because of Thailand market’s volatility and attraction to the general public but our keynote speakers’ crucial insights – It’s undoubtedly an enlightening night full of excitement! So, without further ado, let’s review some of the best lines from our keynote speakers!

Mr.Olan Sumananusorn
Culture differences and business development that we cannot ignore

Mr. Olan was born and raised in Thailand; through his 24/7 dedication, he’s had a real good command of Chinese. Believe it or not, he even delivered the speech in Chinese!
Due to his close ties with Thailand, he’s able to walk us through the maze of this overseas bonanza with unique points of view. Take the detailing explanation of its industry for example. Thailand has made the progress by leaps and bounds by focusing on distinguished industry during different period of time; from Thailand 1.0, which essentially made agriculture a focal point, then proceeding to light industry, followed by heavy industry. Nowadays, Thailand 4.0 has been highlighting the significance of creativity as well as innovation, paving the way for “Smart Thailand!”
Given Thailand’s complete supply chain and holistic trade & investment system, in Mr. Olan’s terms, those conditions would rather be attractive, grabbing even more young talents’ attention.

Fiona Lee
A Taiwanese young lady’s laser-like perception ultimately led to her huge success of starting up a business in Thailand

In her early 20s, some thoughts had constantly been tangling with Fiona – She’s always longing for a career success and the lure to expand her visions overseas was never settled. Therefore, she started to think about which country she should go and win a hand. She’s made her point very clearly and precisely “ Since in Western countries or such developed Asian markets as Korea or Japan, things were already heated up, and the environment is also highly competitive,” with firm resolution, as a consequence, she chose Thailand to make her stage debut.
Even though quirky challenges got in the way from time to time, Fiona got the talents to conquer all the obstacles; for those having startup ideas at heart and feeling deeply interested in Thailand market, here’s advice from Fiona if you want a successful case:
Looking into the market
Her “looking into” here doesn’t merely mean the online research but includes your personal immersion into the market. Recalling the memories, Fiona said she used to sit down on the side, observing what Thai fashion is, and which genre of products may be the hits, so on so forth. Yes, when it comes to a business, standing in clients’ shoe is the priority!
Language learning
“If you want to negotiate with Thai people, you definitely need to know their language!” Fiona stated. If in each occasion, whenever we wanna make a deal with Thai people, but instead of direct communication we hired an interpreter, it shows we actually lack the passion to deal with matters! Speaking their language is not just our capability, but also a way to show our concern and respect. Meanwhile, from attending a language school, we can make friends with locals, thus getting deeper insights into what they love, hate, and what their characteristics are! That’s something in terms of building up close social networks.
Understanding of legal concepts
This part might be complicated and tedious, but if we ever want to steer our career life right, the basic understanding of legal concepts is a must! Incorporation, recruitment, taxes, bank accounts and visas etc, there’re various procedures we must bear in mind. Don’t let these quirky challenges steer you wrong, take the initiatives and be a problem solver!

THINKTANK @ Computex | THINKTANK pushed themselves HIGHER in Computex, the biggest tech expo in Asia

Wait, what is Computex?

Due to Taiwan’s complete supply chain of the ITC industry, Computex Taipei, the biggest tech exhibition in Asia, has established its tradition ever since its debut. With ITC developing a solid foundation, topics related to such cutting-edge technology as blockchain, 5G, IoT, startups as well as gaming and VR all went viral this year.

Aside from impressive main topics, InnoVEX, one of Computex’s featured exhibits highlights dynamic arena of sorts, offering the demo, pitch, workshop, forum, and startup tour, therefore drawing 388 innovative teams’ attention from around the globe!

If you are captivated by state-of-the-art technology, startup things, or deeply interested in knowing global startup ecosystem, Computex is absolutely a great fit for you. If unfortunately you already lost the chance this time, make sure to show up at the grand expo next year in our splendid spring and take your own pace to walk through distinguished conferences and forums. A broad spectrum of blue ocean opportunities will be here for you to uncover!

Here’s our batch member, THINKTANK!

STARTBOARD is honored to have some outstanding batch members participating in Computex. Among them, THINKTANK is a team that fully displays its diversity. With members coming from both sides of Atlantic and Pacific countries, (the States, the UK, Japan, India, Taiwan, and Japan are included) innovation is bound to have more possibilities in THINKTANK.

THINKTANK has devoted efforts 24/7 to developing “AI ecosystem for smart cities.” Currently, through two of their major products – CLAPPIO and EXIT, THINKTANK provides AI services with the good use of Internet of People (IoP) as a reasonable-priced replacement for Internet of Things.

In Computex 2018, THINKTANK not only got the ticket to “speed dating” with news media worldwide but separated themselves from the crowd by successfully pitching their products as well as services.

For the former, InnoVEX was holding the startup “speed dating,” which allowed startup teams of all kinds to give their marketing blitz a full play. In THINKTANK’s opinion, this setup enables new teams to elevate media exposure, which is both fun and purposeful.

For the latter, the chance to pitch their products at InnoVEX stand is fully utilized by THINKTANK. Several business minds were lucky enough to see how this team precisely locates consumer pain points and “uses IoP efficiently” to improve quality of life.

Startup Forum: Biomedical Startup Developments in Asia-Pacific Markets

On 12, June 2018 STARTBOARD will co-organize the startup forum in National Taipei University of Technology, focusing on biomedical industry development of emerging markets in Asia.

There’re three main contexts in this forum: quality management in biomedical industry, how biomedical firms tap into Southeast Asian markets, and ASEAN teams’ first-hand experiences to start up business in Taiwan.

We’re honored to invite STARTBORD’s mentor, professor Fang, to take the floor, talking about development in medical appliances as well as relevant business model innovation!

Professor Fang is an emeritus professor teaching at National Taipei University of Technology. His constant devotion to biomaterials throughout the years is particularly admirable.

Additionally, one of STARTBOARD’s teams, InnoviZ will elaborate on bittersweet experiences to launch a business in Taiwan. The startup specializing in visualization augmented and virtual reality for real estate and business marketing will surely widen our horizons by their sharing!

STARTBOARD exposes to more young talents of the new markets.

STARTBOARD would like to show our appreciation to everyone who always support our idea and goal. That means a lot to us! We look forward to more people joining us and together creating a more friendly environment for all the talents who wants to start a startup in Taiwan.

Jen Lin – Operation Manager of STARTBOARD was sharing the experience and our mission to more local students about South East Asia and India’s market.

In Vision 2018 – National Taiwan University, we met with local students who were looking for more opportunities in South East Asia and India but still got hesitation and questions.

Entering to a brand new market is a challenge especially for foreign startups so the ability of generating right resources as well as right timing is truly important.  A well-planned and strategic plan for expansion is the must-have but still always be alert of the ever-changing environment.

STARTBOARD hopes to narrow the gap between local Taiwanese business and international partners in order to help more talents to adapt to new climate with reliable, transparent connections.

A LOVELY VISITING TO LINE TAIWAN OFFICE

The first day of the week and the last day of July!

Today STARTBOARD got a honored chance to pay a visit to Line Taiwan Office in Neihu area. We were so amazed by how LINE Taiwan office was arranged. The big open space with lots of nature light, so good drinking bar, big convenient meeting rooms with all the Line’s characters everywhere … it does not look like an office at all and it gives such a pleasure feeling to the coming guests.

Sitting down together in a cozy room, STARTBOARD team and LINE’s representative Mr.Jen got a great time sharing from both sides on startups and startup ecosystem nowadays in Taiwan as well as globally. We got the same voices on so many concerns about the environment for startups to grow and how to encourage young entrepreneurs to explore their potentials.

It was such a motivation for STARTBOARD  when we know that even big company like LINE also had program to give a hand on building a stronger startup ecosystem in Asia. The startup supporting program of the company called “LINE PROTOSTAR” – is designed to give a help for tech startups which are less than 5 years old, privately held and make less than 1 million USD in annuals earnings. LINE is aiming to transform its messaging app into a “smart portal” where users can retrieve content, services and information in chats or Channel Web Applications. To achieve this vision, the company is recruiting partners to build their applications and services on the LINE platform. LINE believes in building valuable long-term partnerships by helping startups grow and succeed.

The term “protostar” means the prototype of a star. LINE considers each startup is like a protostar, has the potential to become a large enterprise (supergiant star). The company’s idea is that by joining the program, the startup would have a chance to work with LINE to build applications using LINE’s platform and expand their business to LINE users. Protostar provides startup team access to free LINE Business Connect account for application development, for production services and technical consultant from LINE as well. The program is such a promising land for tech startup lovers!

For more details about LINE PROTOSTAR program, you can direct to the link

Keep stay updated from STARTBOARD for more information about startup world!

“When we least expect it, life sets us a challenge to test our courage and willingness to change; at such a moment, there is no point in pretending that nothing has happened or in saying that we are not yet ready. The challenge will not wait. Life does not look back. A week is more than enough time for us to decide whether or not to accept our destiny.”

STARTBOARD In NTU Garage Annual Meeting

On 7th June, STARTBOARD attended NTU Garage Annual Meeting.

NTU Garage, which has been started in 2013,  is a accelator program to nurture young entrepreneurs with hope of providing students and faculty with a friendly space to realize their innovative ideas. Start-ups that qualify for programs at the garage would enjoy various kinds of training and assistance for six months, with the overlapping period between applications and the program’s course designed to promote exchanges between the last group of participants and newcomers.

Participants receive legal and accounting consulting about setting up firms, as well as learn from experienced instructors. Participants also receive opportunities to demonstrate their products. As the young entrepreneurs might not have the money to set up an office, they can go to the NTU Garage to work .

STARTBOARD felt very honor to meet up with Minister Liang-Gee Chen, Ministry of technology and George Huang, Chairman of Acer.

We are looking forward to having more support and chances in the future, in order to provide our ASEAN-INDIA the best sources nurturing their innovative ideas.
