Is it possible to make speakers even smaller? Acoustic design startup: beyond your imagination

【Startup Spotlight–Sounds Great】

As we are provided with a wide range of social media influencers, platforms such as YouTube, Netflix, and Hulu, each tries their very best to attract our attention. This ongoing influence leads us to continue to watch the next video that is recommended by the algorithm.

According to studies, about 78% of people are watching online videos every day in Taiwan, therefore the average time of watching is 1.6 hours per day. The thriving media industry is also bringing an increased demand for audio and visual equipment. The research institute, GHK, indicated that the first half of 2019, the global speakers and headphones market reached USD 8.7 billion. In this industry with a bright future, there is an acoustic design startup from Taiwan, that will undoubtedly blow our minds and show us the innovative technology of audio hardware design. The Taiwan-based startup – Sounds Great is founded by Hong Da Chou, his classmates, and his instructor in college. Their core technology is using semiconductors and electromagnets to redesign traditional audio speakers.  The team responded, “Long story short, we will reduce the size of traditional speakers by 99%, whereas the volume is fifty times louder than before.” Hong Da Chou, the founder of Sounds Great, took out a coin from his pocket and spoke, “just imagine that we put a boombox into this coin.”   Sounds Great and their core technology makes them stand out from a crowd, as they have also gained many acknowledgments from professionals as well as businesses. Sounds Great also got selected and awarded by the FITI innovation and startup program.

【It starts with an idea of bulletproof vest】

Hong Da Chou flashed back to his college life when he was an undergraduate majoring in Chemistry in FJCU. He found a high-strength fiber material in the lab and was pondering about how to commercialize this material. The initial idea that crossed his mind was “I can use this fiber material to strengthen the bulletproof vest and it will save many soldier’s life!” As a result, Hong Da Chou sent testing samples to a testing laboratory and waited for the feedback. The researcher of the testing laboratory showed them the outcome of the testing results and introduced a speaker diaphragm manufacturer, which was looking for a similar fiber material they made. Therefore, Sounds Great pivoted their bulletproof vest business idea to the game-changing acoustic material startup.

【Early stage – money burning to survive in the winter of R&D】

The very beginning of startup life was a tough time.  As a hardware startup is not like SaaS, software, and mobile app startup. The capital is burning for the salary, rent, equipment, testing materials and so forth. It wore out their passion and entrepreneur dream of this budding startup and suddenly brought them back to reality. Hong Da Chou recalled their early stage. To gain more financial aids, Hong Da Chou brought their proposal to meet with various investors, apply for government subsidies, and exhibit in startup expo.  Then, Sounds Great received a wonderful chance to be chosen in the FITI program organized by the Ministry of Science and Technology and represented Taiwan startup to receive business training in Singapore for a month. In the early stage, they adjusted and restructured their business model from the opinions by mentors in Singapore.

【External investment – the spring is around the corner】

After burning the midnight oil day by day, Sounds Great has finally proved its core technology and collects enough experiment data. Recently, Sounds Great is a partner with the semiconductor market leader to start further steps of product-market fit. Hong Da Chou showed the chairs in the office and said, “we have some nice and comfortable chairs here because we seep at the office often.” Sounds Great is a member of the STARTBOARD incubation program. The first investor meetup does not have any financial support, but that was an excellent experience for them to sharpen their pitch skills and business proposal.

Entrepreneurship is hard, especially for the first couple of years; however, Sounds Great has developed a strong foundation for their business from previous failures. The student startup–Sounds Great has transformed and became more mature in both their mentality and product. Then, their pitch and business are receiving more and more helpful feedback from different pitch competitions and investors. Sounds Great was enduring through the winter of being an underdog and finally obtained the investor’s monetary support and received a lot of public attention last year. This investment boosts the team and their product; Meanwhile, there are some global brands that see the potentiality of the innovation of audio devices. Sounds Great receives more support from the hearing-aid company as well as the Government. For this budding startup, Spring has come earlier than expected.

【The global business strategy and risk management】

There is a whiteboard with a clear roadmap of business strategy and patent portfolio at Sounds Great’s office. The demand for home theatre and smart home devices has increased significantly and the acoustics development has been technologically stagnant for years. Sounds Great is ready to take action to make good use of their game-changing audio technology, either having their brand or becoming the OEM partner of audio equipment companies. Besides US and European markets, Sounds Great is also planning to strategically expand their business in Singapore and Vietnam, and arrange for the Southeast Asia market. During the interview, Sounds Great would like to recruit talented engineers specialized in semiconductor, acoustic devices, and product development. If you are the one with the desired background, Sounds Great welcome you to join this high-potential startup to bring the world a better audio experience.

This startup brand of Taiwan represents everyone who contributes to Taiwan’s startups.

New Immigration Voice

According to government statistics, one out of forty workers in Taiwan comes from ASEAN countries. There have been more than 540 thousand foreign spouses since 1998, and one in three of them is from ASEAN countries. On top of that, 20 percent of newborn babies are these ASEAN workers’ descendants. As a consequence, these ASEAN fellows and their children are significant to us. However, we found that they are mainly blue-collar workers. Despite the fact that some may open start their own business, these businesses are mostly restaurants or food stands.

In order to improve current situations, STARTBOARD is going to launch the “#NewImmigrationVoice” project, hoping that through the support from the government, we can cooperate with these spokesmen to build up a platform for starting up their own business and addressing their thoughts.

This forum is the bridge of connection and the prologue of the “New Immigration Voice” program, allowing each of us to have a more profound understanding of the descendants of ASEAN immigrants.

To most descendants of ASEAN immigrants, the discovery of self-identity is a time-consuming journey. Along the way, they may encounter numerous ups and downs. However, as they move on, more thoughts and opinions regarding their parents’ hometown and their identity may come to them.

The three descendants of ASEAN immigrants are fortunate to find their roles in life. They are now proud of who they are, able to make use of their strengths to begin a new chapter of their lives. Yet, not all descendants of ASEAN immigrants are fortunate enough. Some may still be searching, while some may still be in shadows.

This is the point of the “New Immigration Voice” program. Through the collaboration between STARTBOARD and descendants of ASEAN immigrants, we hope to raise more voice and bring about a friendlier environment for ASEAN immigrants and their descendants alike.

Brand Ambassador Program

There are many international students in Taiwan who have the idea of starting a business. However, because there are no resources and channels to consult and assist, STARTBOARD has established an ambassador program and recruited 11 international students from 7 different countries to become STARTBOARD Brand ambassador.

Hoping to promote the core value of STARTBOARD  and encourage more students to start their own business in Taiwan, make their dream come true.

Co-prosperity series event: how do we facilitate the startup ecosystem in Taiwan

On May 16th, STARTBOARD was honored to be invited to participate in “Startup Genome by  Ministry of Science and Technology, “ held by Ministry of Economic Affairs and Dr. Zhan Yijian. Here’re some highlights of important remarks during the event. The host of this session is Dr. Zhan Yijian, the ambassador of the startup ecosystem. The ambassador’s duty is mainly to enhance the international visibility of our entrepreneurial ecosystem, looking forward to the activation of the current ecosystem.

At the beginning of the meal, Tu Junyi, the Deputy Director of the Ministry of Science and Technology, delivered an opening speech.

The deputy director introduced the spirits and service projects of the Ministry of Science and Technology and explained the plans that have been promoted recently. The Ministry of Science and Technology clings on to the concept of “commercialization of scientific research products” and established TTA (Taiwan Tech Arena) in the Taipei Arena. TTA’s success is so evident that TTA is ranked at the first in Global Entrepreneurship Monitor (GEM), published by Babson College and London Business School.

In addition, the Deputy Director also mentioned that it is hoped that the accelerators of different industries will be able to promote the prosperity of the ecosystem at the front-end of innovation, and the government and enterprises can join hand in hand, working together to increase the international visibility. The event was initiated by Dr. Zhan and hopefully there’ll be more and more similar opportunities so that relevant regulations and environment in Taiwan can be improved in a perfect manner.

Dr. Zhan Yijian also gave a speech to introduce the event and visions and direction of this series. This event concentrated on startup accelerator. Hopefully through the discussions and exchanges, such institutions may play a pivotal role in our startup ecosystem. There’re two distinctive topics, which were the role and positions of the accelerator on a global scale as well as the differences and demands of related policies across the country and over the world. Last but not least, they also well embraced opinions from industries.

Many may know him as the co-founder of AppWorks; nonetheless, he has been joining VC from 2004, making devotions to accelerators, and thereby establishing AppWorks. Additionally, he also spared no efforts and participated in several internet and biotech startup programs. When it comes to why he was selected as the ambassador, he stated with a radiant smile “ I’m quite zealous about sharing startup issues with people.”By sharing his value, he also highlighted “It’s quite significant to steer startup industry in the right direction.”

cf1d8e1e9cbd488a89771254af12ff6a1_14084143_190517_0008 - 複製

Dr. Zhan hoped that this year, the bond between the public and private sectors can be strengthened. This issue has been ringing in his head for a long time. Additionally, he also raised some questions for us to think on deeply, such as “Has Taiwan’s entrepreneurial ecosystem become better these years?” “Do we need more accelerators?”, etc. By elaborating on cases in Silicon Valley, Boston and European countries, he gave a big hand to help participants figure those issues out.

For the starters, we go to the definition – “ What’s a good ecosystem?” Silicon Valley is the origin of startup accelerators. It’s of high quality and quantity by combining numerous elements such as top-notch engineers, angel investors, serial entrepreneurs and venture capitals. As for Boston, it put the emphasis on cooperation between the government and research institutes so as to transform it into a city well focusing on the startup industry. Also,  Belgium makes good use of its industry-academia cooperation, thereby attracting international talents. The government of Israel, on the other hand, promotes its nurturing program to create high margin and cause for investment.

In each country, there exist various strengths for Taiwan to learn from. As for Taiwan, our biggest chance lies in AI as well as smart manufacturing.

Each country’s ecosystem has its own advantages and can be used by Taiwan to learn from it. Taiwan’s strongest advantages and opportunities are in the two major areas of AI and smart manufacturing. At present, there are several national accelerators to foster new energy, from the technical supply end to the market estuary, accelerating the potential of new market potential. Support and get investment.

In this era of social media, accelerators all around the globe have the desire to connect with each other; therefore, it’s a good opportunity that Taiwan cannot miss out on. Dr. Zhan calls for everyone’s attention to develop a community of startup ecosystems around the world.

The STARTBOARD team is honored to have had the opportunity to visit the Presidential Office’s New Southbound Policy Office on May 3rd with Mr. Yu Bojun, the attorney-in charge presiding over the New Southbound business of the Taipei Bar Association, to report to Deputy Executive Secretary Luo and Secretary Lin our specific results and efforts over the past couple years, including having coached ASEAN-Indian youth teams to start business in Taiwan; being about to publish the Entrepreneur’s Manual; having hosted various theme nights for communities with common goals to locate their best fit; creating the first Taiwanese legal consultancy in Thailand. All these endeavors aim to promote bilateral exchange between Taiwan and the New Southbound countries and to boost talent flow and resources circulation in the region, through which enterprises can expand beyond borders; competent entrepreneurs can realize their ambition in Taiwan; investors can spot perfect targets; the government resources can be dutifully and properly allocated. The ultimate goal STARDBOARD has been striving for is to establish a fluid procedure where novel, forward-looking concepts can materialize without sundry confines of technicalities.

Throughout the meeting, Deputy Executive Secretary Luo and Secretary Lin kept coming up with genuine comments while brainstorming with Attorney Yu and the STARTBOARD team on how to better assist entrepreneurs. Their professionalism and enthusiasm were so impressive that my admiration was immediately earned. I felt blissfully fortunate to have this dedicated New Southward Policy Office to help promote well-intentioned services made possible by the collaboration of the government and NGOs.

STARTBOARD COO Uniform Lin is especially appreciative of the support and assistance given by the government and the industry over the years. In the future, we are determined to continue expansion of our services, fostering a well-rounded entrepreneur-friendly ecosystem. Reinforced by the government, a sustainable environment is being built where both ASEAN-Indian and Taiwanese professionals can thrive and prosper.
